I had PLANS this weekend.

This weekend was going to be Clear Out Under The Stairs Weekend. [livejournal.com profile] axylides has been indicating for some time that she wants shelves up under there, and we now have shelving kit courtesy of Rolf and Carole, so I was all geared up to start on that. Then, on Saturday morning, I ill-advisedly put my weight on one of our bookshelves to lever myself up from behind the table, and with a sickening crack the shelf splintered in several places and gave way underneath me.

I know. I said "ill-advisedly." I was an idiot, I know it.

So all the stuff had to be taken off and all the loose shelves removed from the bookshelf in question, which had to be hoiked forward away from the wall so that I could take out the screws which had been holding the failed shelf in position (yes, it was one of the fixed ones) and swap in one of the whole shelves. The failed one underwent running repairs and was redesignated as a loose shelf, and all was well. Except that somewhere in the process I did my back in, and that, combined with the onset of the bug the Countess has been suffering from all week, took my plans and lightly tossed them out of the window. One pain I could have coped with, but not two at once.

I can heartily recommend Thermacare self-heating support belts for this kind of bad back. They make it possible to move almost normally for eight hours out of every twenty-four, and I think I'm almost mended. The bug is taking a little longer to collect its hat and coat and be on its way. I just wish I had done the back in doing what I was planning to do rather than something entirely unrelated...

Sigh.

Hmmm. Should have read this before sending off that E-mail.

Yes, those Thermacare things do wonderfully in such a pinch - I also reccommend them. Most of the time they are easier to find in such situations than a heating pad.

Still, I don't think you were an idiot. Not having advanced degrees or experience in immunology, medicine, or engineering I don't think you "ill-advisedly" did anything other than try to balance yourself against a shelf that felt stable enough from below. It's like blaming yourself for breaking your foot by bringing your spouse a cup of coffee. :D

I hope you are feeling better at this point and...happy new shelves?

Somewhere I've seen a story of a person who had a continuous stream of accidents, each precipitating the next (no, not the Murphy one with the bucket). I think he survived it, just...

What do you mean, "entirely unrelated"? :)

First of all, *hugs* from me, too, and get better! Second, it did have something to do with shelves, so it wasn't entirely unrelated... I hope knowing that helps a little. :) If it doesn't help, I hope it at least gave you a chuckle.
