Yes, those Thermacare things do wonderfully in such a pinch - I also reccommend them. Most of the time they are easier to find in such situations than a heating pad.
Still, I don't think you were an idiot. Not having advanced degrees or experience in immunology, medicine, or engineering I don't think you "ill-advisedly" did anything other than try to balance yourself against a shelf that felt stable enough from below. It's like blaming yourself for breaking your foot by bringing your spouse a cup of coffee. :D
