A question for my German friends
Apr. 30th, 2013 07:49 pmI encountered this the other day on Facebook:
"When renewables supply 20 to 30 percent of all electricity, many utility-energy engineers predict, the system will no longer be able to balance supply and demand. Brownouts will ripple across the landscape; control centers will call up big companies and beg them to turn off the lights; managers of ultrasensitive modern control centers will watch in horror as voltage drops lead to factory shutdowns. (Germany, a leader in renewable-energy use, is already facing this situation.)"
Is this in fact the case?

In other words: my lights are all working ;)

Date: 2013-04-30 10:55 pm (UTC)The only way this could happen is if the power companies start shutting down power plants because they are getting enough power coming back to the grid from local power generators such as roof top solar or wind turbines.
If this causes brown-outs on low generation days due to heavy clouds or wide spread storms, then the brown outs were self inflicted by the power companies. Whose role is supposed to be the big backup supply/batteries for a solar/wind powered area.
