...that Margaret Thatcher may have died.

I will not be celebrating. The fleshly husk is irrelevant, the cessation of life within it of no consequence. She lives, in the craven spirit of collaboration that has destroyed what used to be known as the Loyal Opposition and reduced our democracy to a sham, in the ongoing and seemingly unstoppable destruction of everything our parents fought for (whether they knew they were fighting for it or not). She is not dead as long as state benefits are seen as something optional (or as a "reward"), as long as defence is still more important than feeding the hungry, as long as the rich and their lackeys still presume to tell us, the people, what is good for us.

Maybe when her mind deserted her body it migrated, as she would no doubt have wished, into the stones and mortar of Pugin's immense Gothic folly on the banks of the Thames, to pervert and distort the souls of all those who may have entered those portals with good intent. Maybe it broods even now over the cosmetic deliberations of those who pretend to represent us. Maybe someone should walk those corridors of power with bell, book and candle (but what book? Das Kapital? No) to drive her tormenting daemon out into eternal darkness.

No, there is nothing to celebrate today. What died is nothing, less than nothing. What lives on, the evil that she did and that she planned, is still with us, and may never be exorcised till that edifice finally falls victim to a latter-day (and better-prepared) Fawkes, and people gather in the shadow of its ruins to forge a better, cleaner system of government.

That is not dead, after all, which can eternal lie. And lying was but one of her talents.
