My glasses frame snapped at some point, and a lens made a bold break for freedom. The opticians can't do much with a snapped frame, so I have it held in with sellotape at the moment, which isn't ideal but at least means I can do things. How long it will last gods only know. I have an appointment for an overdue sight test on Thursday and then we shall have to see about some new glasses, won't we?

But why don't you have a spare pair, Zander? Because whenever there's been an offer of two pairs for the price of one I've been just fine and dandy with the pair I've got. Glasses are a non-trivial expense and when you live at our level you don't get them just because they're cheap this week, and you don't--ever--pay for two pairs. Not when you only have one head. And then of course this happens and you wish you had, knowing that if you had something else would have gone short, something as important or more so.

My life. Gotta love it.

At least they waited until your eye exam was almost here!

If you have a large Asda nearby, large enough to have an optician, I have heard that they are far, far cheaper than other places. Just go there with your prescription.

Will Zenni Optical work for you, or is there an equivalent service that will delive to the UK and Europe? If so, be sure you have your prescription, including pupillary distance, and their prices should make a replacement or backup pair of glasses affordable.

Having just ordered a primary pair of glasses for my son yesterday (which we'll pick up today if he hauls himself out of bed anytime soon :-) we plan to get him a backup pair rather than have him go weeks in school again with glasses held together with duct tape.

I use SelectSpecs - you do need to measure your inter-pupillary distance, or ask your optician to do so, but they're cheap and I've had no problems other than one slow delivery over Christmas!

Last time I ordered from them, I got two pairs for £45, including anti-reflection, anti-UV and anti-scratch coatings and lens thinning. It would just have been less than £20 inc. shipping if I'd just gone for the pair with the cheaper frame.

Seconding Zenni Optical, I've had to pay silly money for emergency replacement glasses too many times now so I always bung in a second pair (flat rate postage £15 however many you buy.) The "best" pair cost £20 and people comment how nice they are, the "backup" set look fine and cost £8.
