Today I fitted a ceiling light in the living room, and it works. Last time I tried the thing was faulty. It's a cheap thing from Lidl that takes six low-energy blubs and theoretically gives more light than our previous single 150w old-fashioned carbon-guzzling blub. Frankly I'll believe it when I see it after dark. At the moment it looks like six low-energy blubs, i.e. almost but not quite entirely unlike total darkness. And I'm the one with the working eyes,

I have also spent most of the last two days clearing up cat poop. This was definitely not the career my mother raised me for. I did attempt to catch the offending mog, a scraggy grey thing known as Houdini who eats everyone's food and promptly deposits it everywhere he can think of, and ended up breaking Jan's precious bead curtains and having to mend them before I could do anything else. "Just part it with one hand," quoth the Countess. You try when you have a double armful of spitting clawing feline rage ineffectively wrapped in a towel.

My upstairs computer (you remember) actually recognised the sound card when I switched it on last night. Great, I thought, I'll leave it on so that nothing can possibly go wrong. Came back an hour later to find it hung up on the screensaver (starfield--I ask you, the single simplest screensaver in Windows' entire arsenal) and when I finally managed to get it to reboot, guess what, "No audio device." Grrrr.

All of which is explanation (but not excuse) for suspended Advent operations. I shall resume normal service as soon as possible.

That reminds me that I have a 'low energy' bulb in my spare room that I have been meaning to change for months.

It's not that it doesn't light up at all, but it takes 20 minutes* to come up to its full brightness. I mean, what use is that? If I want to find a book, I want to find it now, not in 20 minutes time when I can see in the room.

* No exaggeration. Seriously.

For rooms like that I've put in the halogen bulbs that look like proper bulbs ... nice bright white light, comes on quickly, uses less energy than the old incandescent bulbs ... just cost more :-(
