Took Jelly to the vet's the other day after he emulated Houdini the Poop Fairy by exhibiting a sample of his product on the hall carpet and it proved to contain a certain amount of blood. Since then we've been feeding him on chicken and special bland food which he has now Gone Off. He has also taken to hiding in a dark corner, which is always worrying.

The vet thinks it's probably stress arising from the sudden influx of new cats, but also told me that he needs dental work, to the tune of You Do Not Want To Know. So that's another thing.

Dental infections can trigger a host of other problems if the infection goes septic. Is the mouth painful? (Likely) If not, I encourage you to pick up a pet toothbrush & pet-safe toothpaste and start traing him to allow this, but only if the mouth is not painful. Otherwise it will become an aversive process.
Alas, dry food does not clean the teeth as it isn't chewed, merely splintered and swallowed.
If infection was present, the vet should have given you some antibiotic to help control it, which makes it a bit safer to do the dentistry (less likely to spread infection systemically).
Also, the vet should be able to take X-rays of the mouth to check if any teeth have been partially resorbed below the gum line; those have to come out too.

Poor Jelly. :(

I hope the vet can do what's necessary to make him feel better.

Mr Horrible isn't too happy about the New Cat situation either.

*hugs* Hear you, we have two "dental cats" here. Only light symptoms, but lady Vet already said that someday Cassiopeia would need to have dental treatment.
Gentle scritches to Jelly.

Have you got a PDSA near you? If you're on housing or council tax benefit you should be eligible for them - you only pay for medications, all other treatment is a donation of whatever you can afford.

*Hugs* to poor Jelly. And *hugs* to you and Jan, who care a lot about him.
