So as far as I can tell (and this is all unreliable, like all other information on the net), here's what just happened...

Obama is currently ahead in the American presidential race. We come up to tfhe anniversary of the attack on the World Trade Centre and even that doesn't seem to be helping Mitt Romney. In the meantime, apparently, a pastor in Florida has been promoting a film which alleges that Muhammad, the Prophet of Islam, was a child molester and extortionist, and, possibly as a consequence of this film going viral on Youtube, extremists of some sort or another attack the US Embassy in Libya, twice, on two successive days, and the second time they succeed in killing the Ambassador. Romney gets in quickly, before the White House has responded, with a statement criticising Obama for "sympathising with those who waged the attack." Needless to say, Obama's actual statement says nothing of the kind, but that's hardly relevant.

I am not a conspiracy buff. But this stinks to high heaven.

Maybe I'm overreaching when I suggest that the forces behind Bush would not have scrupled to use bin Laden to help cement their puppet's shaky grip on power, or that a few thousand lives would mean nothing to them, or that their chief ally in covering this up would be the refusal of the American people to believe such evil. I could be wrong about that.

But leaking a provocative video to a hate group in Libya, knowing that they would respond violently, doesn't matter how as long as Americans die? Can anyone doubt that the current Republican leadership would do that in a hot second, if they thought it would help them recapture America from the forces of moderation and fairness? They already lie, cheat, defraud the electorate and condone anti-abortion atrocities. It's just one more step.

If I'm wrong, I apologise from the bottom of my heart. If I'm right, I hope to gods someone finds out.

From my understanding:

- there was unrest in Egypt (including breaking into the US Embassy) over the same video earlier yesterday (Tuesday) (i.e. before the death of the US-Libyian ambassador)
- the film was financed, directed, and written by an Israeli-American real estate person (with Jewish financial backing, so expect more Muslim-Jewish attacks)
- some Coptic Christain (what the heek is that?) has been promoting the film in Egypt

I think you are overreaching in terms of Republican Party backing of this video leak/reaction. Call me naive, but the actions of a few anti-Islamic people within a political party should not define the party. HOWEVER, the party leader should be very careful on followup media releases as their words CAN represent the thoughts of the party. I think Romney's comments just show how informed he/his party really is on the issue. It's interesting how a number of other people in his party did NOT back in him or have even refuted his comments. Perhaps this is Romney's disgrace that will cost him the election?

Nevermind: the writer/director has been IDed as someone from California who is a "Coptic Christian with a checkered past"...

Romney's statement was horrible.

But the current administration has been playing nice with the post-Ghadaffi regime, and one would think that if the Libyan government was truly on our side they would have done more to protect the embassy. And I'm flabbergasted that the US Marines didn't do their job, either.

And I am heartbroken. I knew Christopher Stevens slightly - he was a former Peace Corps volunteer from the other side of the San Francisco Bay, we had an alumni group in common.

I have to say: leaving aside the question of whether they would plan something like this ... I think if it had been a plan, Romney's reaction would have been better-choreographed.

As it is, it was a truly epic gaffe and the only public figure I've heard express a positive opinion about Romney's response is that gasbag Rush Limbaugh.

Maybe my mind is too twisty, then, because to me it seems like just the sort of huge gaffe that would disarm suspicion.

I don't know. We'll see how public feeling goes. It's entirely possible that I watch too much television.

The thing is, if the gaffe was planned, then where's the benefit?

'That gasbag Rush Limbaugh' (a lovely and apt phrase) has been speculating that Al-Qaeda allowed their former Big Bad to be captured and killed (making the Final Sacrifice for the Jihad) in a Fiendish Conspiracy to assist the re-election of their good friend President Obama.

Don't become like Rush, Zander. Avoiding believing in conspiracies until there's actual evidence for them.

We humans have a compulsion to try to make senseless events explainable which accounts for the popularity of conspiracy theories. Sometimes you just have to say 'shit happens'.

I...don't quite know how to react to that comparison.

I'll have to think about that.

Sorry Zander. Didn't mean to offend or to hurt your feelings. The paralells seemed obvious to me and it's a habit of thought that's all too easy to fall into.

From one of my two favorite "Calm Down, It's Only Smoke and Mirrors" sites, a pretty cogent description of what was going on and who was misstating to whom. Bottom line is that the ADMINISTRATION didn't say anything, really, it was the Cairo embassy and it was before the Libyan attack.
