Tune should be obvious. Inspiration, recent events in Michigan. And thanks are due to [livejournal.com profile] pocketnaomi, who reassured me that not being in possession of one of the attributes in question was no bar to my writing the song.

Vagina,
Rep. Brown (D-MI) said vagina,
And suddenly the room
Was silent as a tomb
Could be,
Vagina,
She stood up and she said vagina,
And all those old white guys
Were stricken with surprise
To see,
Vagina,
Male members grew limp with horror,
You would think they had just toured Gomorrah,
Vagina,
Today and tomorrow
Vagina.

Vagina,
They banned her for saying vagina.
That simple Latin word
Too awful to be heard
By men.
Vagina,
They want to control your vagina,
They'll try to stake a claim,
But don't dare speak its name
Again.
Vagina,
Say it loud and the creeps start shaking,
Say it soft and the system starts breaking.
Vagina,
The power is waking,
Vagina!

Why am I up at 3:31 you may ask?

Well, the dog is on tablets which make him drink a great deal and if I don't get up around 2 or 3 and take him outside he will have an accident. And the computer is sitting there tempting me, and I'll just check my LJ and see if one of my favourite authors has updated one of her stories on AO3... and before you know it....

Well done. This is the best possible response to censorship: making even more noise.

Oh, splendid! Good stuff! And absolutely singable.

However, I'm struggling with the scansion of one line - I may be misremembering the original - 'Say it loud and the creeps start shaking' - I find myself a syllable short and want to sing 'begin' instead of 'starts' there, plus it avoids the repetition of the word in the next line. Is that cheeky / just plain wrong on my part?

Oh... and the 'male members' line as well... er, 'flaccid' has the extra syllable...? (the following line is just gorgeous!)

Sorry! It's just so good! I mean this as compliment, entirely - I'm sort of half daring myself to actually sing it...

The original line there is "Say it loud and there's music playing..." so I think my scansion is right, but by all means make whatever adjustments you wish, and do sing it if such be your desire.

Isn't it the "Say it loud and there's music playing" line? Syllables absolutely o.k.!

One has to stretch "Ma-le" over two notes, but that works better than any other word I could think of.

No matter how obvious you think the tune SHOULD be, there will be those who do not know it or will not recognize it. Always give the title/source.

In this case, yes, "Maria" from "West Side Story" is pretty obvious for anyone who knows it. It's not "the same old ballad meter", it's pretty recognizable. But not everyone is a fan of musicals from half a century ago - even musicals that are considered Classics. I'm old enough to remember when the movie came out in 1961 but today's teenager's may not be so familiar with material from "Several decade before they were born".

Thanks ever so! I may (unless restrained) start singing that the next time I'm drunk enough not to care what I sound like...
