From a book about a deceased musician who spent some time as part of an iconic band, a quote by another member of said band, about a third, also deceased:

"[Band member] had like eight Ovation guitars that all had to be tuned up, to save him putting on a capo." [Italics mine]

For my next filkcon set I will be requiring twelve keyboards, each one transposed up a semitone, to save me bothering with the black notes...

That's the least you can expect from the ConCom, really.

I'm not sure I want to know what kind of fiddling you'd have to do with a guitar's strings to have it tuned at the equivalent of capo-8 or wherever. I'm quite sure that if you didn't adjust the string parameters then you'd end up with quite a lot of very-easily-breakable strings...

I suppose there probably is a difference in sound between an up-tuned guitar and a capo-ed guitar, but tuning up 8 halftones does indeed sound like seriously overstrained strings...

Could make playing certain chords interesting.

Steve Race's autobiography relates having been summoned once to Irving Berlin's hotel room in London; he needed a pianist because, he said, his piano at home had a gear lever for playing in different keys.

His reason for it, however, was the opposite: he played everything in F#.

You mean that the black ones are meant to *do something* ??

This sounds like someone whose first instrument was the tin whistle. Buying one in each key is reasonable (though from the look of a page I just found, could be overdone)
