...will television writers ever come to the realisation that "science fiction fans" and "UFO believers" are two different groups of people?

Somebody had better be ready to catch them when they do.

They have yet to come to the realisation that "science fiction fans" and "women" are not mutually exclusive sets of people.

I think I know more knitters in SF fanfom than I do UFOlogists.

Since it's a matter of belief rather than of study, wouldn't "UFOarians" be a better word?

It all depends on the programme, whether it is fact or fiction and who is making it. Paul McAuley was treated excellently on Start the Week where they even had a go at defining 'hard' SF. China Mieville is a a regular on Radio 3.

Zan, I know four people who write for TV. Only one of them *doesn't* believe he was abducted by aliens.

I am serious.
