Would need to wait till everyone's forgotten Life On Mars, but...

We see: A young, dynamic cop in the middle of a huge drugs bust. Gunfire, lots of people shouting "FREEZE!" and similar, lots of action...and then somebody yells "CUT!" and suddenly the fourth wall is gone and cops and bad guys are wandering off to get their make-up seen to, and the director wants to give our hero/ine some notes on his/her performance. And just as s/he's getting used to the idea that s/he's an actor performing in a TV show about a young, dynamic cop et cetera, BAM it all becomes real again and the lieutenant is asking him/her what the hell happened.

We could spin this out for at least one series without having to worry about why s/he keeps switching between the real and the fictional world. Lots of fun with therapists on both sides (could be the same person; maybe they're behind it?) and meta jokes galore. End on a cliffhanger (of course) with the idea that the TV show is itself the subject of a TV show, and if it works and they want more, well, we'll cross that bridge when we've burned it.

What do you think?

That there was an excellent fan story many years ago, whereby the characters on Star Trek, found themselves as actors on a TV set in California in the 1960s...

It was then followed up by the actors finding themselves on the Enterprise, IIRC.

Can't help wondering how much fun your scenario would be, if it was the old Taggert set... that _would_ be fun! "See hear Jimmy, ahm the polis nae sum namby pamby aictor! *thump*

I'd love it. It's pretty much the premise of the UFO episode 'Mindbender' - and the fanfic 'Visit to a Weird Planet' Real People Fic trope. I also saw a play with a similar theme a couple of years ago.

BUT - every time a TV company has tried a 'breaking the 4th wall' drama the critics have hated it (though admittedly, with Episodes they do have a point), so you'll have trouble selling the idea.

Which is a pity.

Which is why I put it up here instead. :) I know it's been used for one-offs--Eerie Indiana did a very nice one--but I do believe it could sustain a series, if written by the right people.

Who, sadly, are not me.

A very Nyrondish playing with one's head, if I may say so. Go on, you know you want to write the outline.
