I have a truly unprecedented amount of space in my room now, having got rid of a bunch of paper and cardboard that was just taking up space. Also an unprecedented amount of loose dust. Kachew, as they say, kachew.

I also have three partially dissected computers, a CRT monitor and a couple of DIN plug-type keyboards, which are currently on the bed where I sleep. One of the carcasses, I know, is my original Colani Highscreen 486SX, but the others were, I believe, loans or hand-me-downs from various [livejournal.com profile] the_magicians and [livejournal.com profile] djbps. The question before the meeting is, does anyone want any of the bits back? I can bring them back in here tonight and plunk them down on this expanse of floor I seem to have, but I'd ideally like to know before the weekend whether I'm keeping any of them or not. Unfortunately I can't tell with any surety which box has which bits in, but I believe they're all fairly well struck in puter years and may not work with Windows Lampshade or whatever the latest edition is.

A cry of "hang on!" before end of business on Friday will save them from a trip to the recycling centre. Or, of course, if you're sure there's nothing there you need, they could go sooner...

Recycle as far as I'm concerned

The only thing I can think of is that there might be a reusable hard drive controller sitting inside one of those boxes, from when you were having trouble getting a new hard drive to work a few years back? Not essential, but worth hanging on to in case of emergencies. (Or is that inside your current machine? I've lost track of what you've got there...)

If you're feeling brave, find a cardboard box at least 4 inches by six inches by 1 inch; whip the side panels off the machines, and look for a plug-in card (at back of machine) that has a hard drive cabled into it; if/when you find it, undo the retaining screw at the back end of the card (nearest the case), then pull the card out (firm grip along the top edge, and pull gently but steadily, gradually ramping up the "oomph" until it slides free. Sometimes a slight wiggle end-to-end helps get it moving); drop it in the box; label the box and put it somewhere safe.

If you're *not* feeling brave, don't worry about it. =:o}

I'll try and have a look, but if I don't manage it, sorry.

EDIT: I had a look, but I couldn't see it, so the carcasses have gone for salvage. Sorry again.

I think that as I'd totally forgotten about the machine, that "invisible insanity" applies and so can be recycled/left for dead.

I doubt it would have anything newer than Windows 95 on it, and I'm not going that far back into pre-history!

And congratulations on digging out space in there ... I know that it's a *really* hard job, and I'm really proud of you! *hugs*

Thanks on both counts! *hugsback*

Of course, some of this space is crying out to be filled... :D

Give Christine a *hug* from us as well, if you get the chance.

I have some stuff just *begging* to fill that space ... a blue crate, a keyboard, a keyboard stand and a small guitar combo/amp!

I don't think I can make it down this weekend (plan to be in Cambridge on Saturday and in Hackney at my mum's on Sunday) but possibly next weekend (need to check diary) now that I appear to have access to a working car again.

I have *two* keyboard stands here ... a thin one and a thicker one ... one of which has a sort of circle where the X crosses ... (I think the other has a silver bar that clips across) ... can you remember which one was yours? If not, I'll bring them both down and you can see if it rings a bell :-) (I know the other is mine, but I think I've got one of each kind and the other is in storage ...) ...

... I don't suppose you have any use for a wall mounted keyboard rack that can hold up to three music keyboards? I'll put it on ebay otherwise as I don't have any free wall space! I think it's a QuikLok ...

Erm erm I can't remember. I shall know it when I see it, for its eyes are sunken in. I also have two keyboard stands, at least one of which is yours I think.

The wall mounted rack sounds interesting, but sadly I have not enough wall, and what I have is earmarked for shelves to put stuff on.

Next weekend would be wonderful. I'll try and keep the floor clear till then. :)
