The boiler has been repaired, and the nice man from British Gas went round and unstuck some recalcitrant radiators while he was here. We will be billed some time in the next week, leaving plenty of time for Paypal to deliver the necessary, thanks (and many thanks again) to the aforementioned benefactor. So now we have wonderful hot water and warm rooms again, and we're both working like stink trying to reintroduce the concept of order to our upstairs, so generating quite a lot of our own heat. Or we were till the Countess's back refused to play any more and she gave me leave to have some time off.

For those of you who know the Countess's studio, her desk, which was in the middle of the room, is now against the wall nearest the door. This creates an awful lot of space, partly counterbalanced by the fact that we have lost a Useful Corner For Sticking Things And Forgetting About Them. Developments will doubtless ensue.

Glad you are warm again. Sort of on the subject of Paypal, after reading your earlier post, I went to Lulu.com to look at your books and CD. The only shipping option it gave me was "Express", which cost more than twice as much as the books and CD put together, so I didn't buy them after all. Any ideas what I might be doing wrong? Or does it just assume that at this time of year everyone _must_ want the "get it by Christmas" option?

Odd, I just tried it and the only shipping option it gave me was 'mail' at lower than the price of the items. Had you logged in, or were you there as 'guest'? I was logged in, with may change things.

I think I had to create an account and log in before it would let me start putting things in a basket. (I definitely have a confirmation mail saying I did create an account.)
I'll try again.

If I delete the CD from the basket, then much cheaper options appear. And the shipping FAQ says "Publisher Grade Paper, [...] CDs, [...] only printed in the U.S. at this time, these items will incur higher shipping costs and longer delivery times over other items."

I am currently in dialogue with Lulu on their ridiculous shipping rates, and awaiting their response. There should have been a not that exorbitant "Mail" option, though. I don't know why there wasn't.

"You'll be warm by Christmas.
You can count on me.
I'll repair your boiler there,"
said the man from British G.

Glad you're warm again!

Yay you-all for moving things! And yay the gasman (who was to come, and came, and hopefully will not have to come again).
