“What the hazmat—” GoDon leapt for the gunnery console.

“Incoming transmission,” Aphrodite said calmly from a monitor.

“Put it on audio,” GoDon said, staring at the console in front of him as if he expected it to ask him for a coin.

Attention, Imperial ship. This is the pirate vessel Cyrus Chervil. Heave to and prepare to be boarded.

“The pirate vessel WHAT?” Cyrus Chervil swelled with rage. It was a pity that his voice rose to a squeak on the last word. “Aphrodite, whatever your name is, let me talk to them!”

“Seir—er, I should say, Acting Captain GoDon?” Aphrodite’s voice dripped sarcasm.

“Yes, yes...” GoDon was sure he could work out what all these buttons and things did, if only they came with labels.

“Channel open,” Aphrodite said.

“Attention, pirate vessel,” Chervil said, having taken a moment to relocate his baritone. “This is Acting Sergeant Cyrus Chervil of the Vigilante Corps. You will all consider yourselves under arrest, stand down and surrender to me immediately. Otherwise—”

The sound of ribald laughter came clearly over the speakers.

“Enemy weapons fire has ceased,” Aphrodite reported.

“They’re laughing too hard to aim,” GoDon observed, glad of the reprieve.

Sorry,” said the voice from the other ship, “did you say Acting Sergeant or Former Acting Sergeant?

We don’t recognise your authority,” said another voice.

And neither does anyone else,” roared a third, and there was more laughter.

Cyrus Chervil set his teeth. “I have no idea what you are talking about,” he said levelly. “It is true that there has been a slight misunderstanding regarding my credentials, but I am confident that it will soon be resolved. Now. Are you coming quietly?”

For answer, the pirates burst into song. It must be admitted that the ditty selected bore no trace of the hand of either Mr Gilbert or Mr Sullivan, but was rather the work of some amateur with a lively interest in certain areas of human anatomy unsupported by much in the way of practical experience.

“Quietly?” GoDon queried, with irony. “I rather think not.”
