"As touring began to grind on them, the band gradually dissolved one by one."

I do not think that was what the writer meant to say...

And here's me trying to find a clever quip based on either softly and silently vanishing away, or, alternatively, quietly, overhead, the stars going out.

Either way, being ground down does make things dissolve more easily. :-)

(More seriously, I'd be unsurprised if that was written by a native speaker of Italian or Portugese, as Italy and Brazil both have lots of Renaissance fans.)
