He was never a "fake President."

The hour brings forth the man, they say,
The saviour promised long,
To take a stand and win the day
But I guess something just went wrong
For you appeared not in real life
But on the TV screen
While we got someone--well, let's say
He was not what you'd have been.
CHORUS
And I saw you when you laughed
And I saw you when you lied
I saw you make mistakes
You very nearly died
You were flawed and you were weak
And there were times you just scraped by
But you never took the easy way
You never gave your soul away
You were the president
Of my America.
You had your friends around you then,
Bold knights at your command.
Courageous women, honest men,
They were the finest in the land.
And while we watched you week by week
Confront the wrongs of man,
Your counterparts grew rich and sleek
And my world went down the pan.
CHORUS
And now we face another change
Who knows what it will bring
A wider scope, a broader range
Or yet another bastard king
And while I hope for something real
A promise yet to be
My stupid heart can't help but feel
That it was better on TV.
And I saw you when you fought
And I saw you when you won
I saw you face your foes
And defeat them, every one.
You were human, you were small,
And in the end you were undone,
But you showed me where the honour lies,
You taught me how to raise my eyes,
You gave me hope and strength to say
"It doesn't have to be this way,"
And still I hope one day to find
That good can win, that hope's not blind,
And see that White House opened to
A man who's half as real as you--
The president
Of my America.
He was a fictional President. There's a difference.

Romantic idealist to the end ....
