I wasn't tagged for this, for which thanks (I'm not frightfully keen on being tagged) but [livejournal.com profile] dickgloucester did it, and it appealed to me.

Five favourite bands/artists, five songs for each.

1. Mike Oldfield, of course
1. Amarok
2. Ommadawn
3. Tubular Bells 2
4. Tubular Bells (the original)
5. Speak (Tho' You Only Say Farewell), very silly vocal duet with David Bedford

2. Yes
1. Fist of Fire
2. Mind Drive
3. Don't Kill The Whale
4. Be A Good Day
5. We Agree

3. The Enid
1. Golden Earrings (with the false start for preference)
2. Sanctus
3. Judgment
4. Mayday Galliard
5. In The Region Of The Summer Stars

4. Steve Hackett
1. Shadow Of The Hierophant (extended playout)
2. The Steppes
3. Narnia
4. Clocks/The Angels Of Mons
5. Tigermoth

5. Renaissance
1. The Black Flame
2. Let It Grow (quintessential Suncat song)
3. Carpet Of The Sun
4. Touching Once
5. Can You Understand

And that's just what I can think of right now, from my oldest favourites, and just prog-rock...

Dear me. Now I want to come round to your house and sit up all night playing records. I don't know Renaissance, but going on the rest of your selection, I think I would probably love them. Can you suggest where I might start?

You just provoked a massive attack of nostalgic squeeing. I know what Mr Dicky is going to have to convert next from the Ancient Music box of cassettes, currently being transformed into MP3s.

You don't know Renaissance (http://www.nyrond.co.uk/tunes/cots.mp3)? Well, they were a seventies prog-rock band, fronted by Annie Haslam whose voice is as close to Suncat's as I've ever heard, and also featuring Jon Camp on bass who could pass for Orville. They used a lot of classical themes, which shaped their style, and often played with an orchestra.

The core albums are Ashes Are Burning, Turn of the Cards and Scheherazade And Other Stories. Also worth looking at are Novella, Song For All Seasons and Azure d'Or. Amazon and iTunes both have some or all of the above, though as you can imagine, looking for "Renaissance" will also turn up a lot of unrelated stuff, so bring waders.:)
