At the risk of getting squicked, can anyone explain to me what exactly waterboarding is so I can have an opinion on it? (It keeps sounding like some kind of sport, which I know it isn't but something to hang the label on would help...)

EDIT: Okay, thank you all. Now I know. Nasty business.

have you read Boujolds curse of Chalion? What they do to DeLutez is a form of waterboarding.

I'm not going to squik myself, but it is used as torture.

As I understand it, waterboarding involves strapping someone down, blindfolding them, and pouring water on their face/up their nose/in their mouth in an effort to simulate drowning. I could be wrong, though.

At the rsik of squicking you:

While US media reports typically state that waterboarding involves "simulated drowning", Mr Nance explained that "since the lungs are actually filling with water", there is nothing simulated about it. "Waterboarding," he said, "is slow-motion suffocation with enough time to contemplate the inevitability of blackout and expiration. When done right, it is controlled death."

The other folks have already nailed what it is. I just want to note that if you're squicked, it means you've got a conscience (or heart, or soul, or all of those). It's the folks who can even consider doing this to another human being who squick me.

Bother. And there was me hoping that it involved a wetsuit and someone improbably athletic behind a motorboat...

As I understand it, there are some very sick people who do think it's a sport. Abu Ghraib, anyone?
