Just watched a very strange thing called Capturing Mary, by Stephen Poliakoff. I'm recommending it to anyone who has encountered NuWho but isn't a fan thereof, for reasons I can't immediately put into words.
There are...resonances. There's a figure, played by David Walliams, who could so easily be someone's very jaundiced view of the classic Doctor. There's a central character, played by Maggie Smith and somebody else as her younger self, who could so easily have been a Sarah-Jane-who-stayed-home. There are people who pass through time without apparently ageing. There's even some byplay with a key, and it looks a lot like the current TARDIS key. I watched this thing without expectations, because I didn't even know it was on, and by the end I had to remind myself that Stephen Poliakoff does not mess around with popular genre things like Doctor Who, because it seemed so...aimed, if you see what I mean.
It may well turn up on BBC Three or Four some time in the next couple of days, and apparently it's already out on DVD. I don't know if I'd say buy it, but it's worth a look.
And now, since I feel awful (for reasons not connected with the programme), I am going to bed.
