Something that always makes me smile
Jul. 31st, 2009 08:03 amI have on my iPod an mp3 recording of a friend singing a filk I wrote of a song by another friend (the first friend is a very good friend of the second friend) at a convention I don't think I got to (though I could be wrong on that--I'm not sure, memory going). And he sings half the first verse, and there's a shriek of laughter from the audience, and he gets to the end of the second verse and there's more laughter and applause, and when he gets to the end of the song it sounds as if the roof of the building is coming off.
And I sit there in the car and I think to myself "I did that."
It's only a partial I-did-that, of course, because it wouldn't have existed without the beautiful original song, and it wouldn't have gone over half as well without the first friend's excellent performance. But still. On days when I am confronted with the pointlessness of my continued existence, when I see the country and the world heading into places where I do not want to go, when the knots of my life seem irresoluble...that always makes me smile. Because I did that.
Thank you.
