The Pretender and Dollhouse both envisage roughly the same ability...but in The Pretender, the (male) protagonist possessed the ability naturally*--it was something he did--while in Dollhouse, the (female) protagonist had it done to her, presumably against her will.
*to the despair of the Centre, who kept trying to duplicate it and ending up with broken human beings. Guess technology's moved on since then.
