By way of preamble:
Kit and the Widow (of whom you may have heard me speak before) do a very nice song about using the names of the weather stations listed in the shipping forecast as a calming mantra. ("Rockall, Mallin, Humber, Bailey, Shannon and Tyree..." and so on.) I have a filk emerging of this, but I'm somewhat handicapped by the fact that hardly anyone will have heard the original, and K and the W have managed, possibly by supernatural means, to keep all their lyrics off the net, so I can't even show it to you.
Oh well.
The title, as in the original, is "Shipping."
Some folks just get confused, others count to ten
When they encounter stories written by us fen
Some folks just point and sneer, others run in fear
No need to resist, just wander through this little list...Harry, Draco, Lucius, Remus,
Moody, Snape and Black,
Ron, Hermione, Ginny, Pansy,
Dumbledore and Mac,*
When you're depressed and your life seems so trashy
You feel like attacking your friends with a mashie
Just sit down and make up some fiction that's slashy,
Writer, write away.
Buffy, Willow, Tara, Cordy,
Xander, Oz and Spike,
Mix them up and set them going
Any way you like,
When you see nothing but mountains of tedium
Days are as dull as an encyclopaedium
Pen a sex scene with two blokes out of Medium
Writer, write away.
Some folks are horrified, others simply chortle
Who knows what new delights will come through fanfic's portal?
Dexter, NCIS, no need to guess,
Make what they will, it's all grist to our writing mill...Abby, Ducky, Ziva, Tony,
Crichton, D'Argo, Zhaan,
Rygel, Yoda, Dobby, Kermit,
(We) do it, 'cause we can,
Onward and onward our genre's progressing
To futures unnumbered and pairings past guessing
All thanks to a few fen who started K/Sing,
Writers, write away.
*If anyone can think of another HP character whose name rhymes with Black, I will be happy to change this. In the meantime, I apologise to Professor McGonagall for the flagrant disrespect. (Although I now have an image of her and Dumbledore, surrounded by Death Eaters with their wands out, and Albus turning to her and saying "You know, Mac--")
