"Businesses don't make trends."

[livejournal.com profile] madfilkentist said it, I agreed with it, and immediately started wondering. I remember reading about the people who made Lucky Strike cigarettes changing the colour of the packaging so as to persuade more women to start smoking (or some such--corrections invited) and my impression is that there are other examples of trends that were started by some business or group of businesses. Santa Claus' colours, again, spring to mind.

Discussion?

I had this half-baked notion about something to do with hair. Those of you who read Two Magicians when I serialised it in here may remember the Tseneshi witches and their hair-frames. These are constructions of wood, metal and wire in a sort of fan shape, on to which the hair is wound and pinned in ritual patterns. The frame lies down the back for moving around and doing stuff, collapsed and mostly hidden by the hair, but when they want to impress outsiders or work a ritual they pull cords that hang down in front of their chests and the frame rises and fans out, displaying the hair and framing the head like a high collar.

Easy to imagine...but could it be done?
