I'm trying something new this week. Bear with me...
Part 7 of A New Chapter by Sam Armitage is up at http://www.avevale.org/index.php/guests, and here's a sample:

“Away Days”
In Which the almost-familiar turns up in the midst of the unfamiliar
There are seasons when the Powers That Be decide that work is easier. So, to reward us, we get called away on seminars – bitter days spent “learning” things we (generally) already know, with people who we have never met before and probably never will again, while work piles up on our desks.
Tom had been on a Health and Safety course, and Jimmy on aquaculture (we only have three bodies of water of any size, two of those are handled and administered by other bodies, and Wastmere is too large for us to affect in any way – it would only make sense to a bureaucrat). Those, thankfully had only been two days each.
My turn, when it came, was a three-day course on “Treasury Standards for the Modern Civil Service” – relevance minimal, since we weren’t administered under Treasury Rules, and in fact our division had been given accreditation for economic management the previous year.
It was in Ponchester, however, which meant a three-hour train journey each way and turned three days into four plus a late evening.

From this week on, you'll find links at the end of each episode to bring you back to this post, so that if you wish you can comment. And if you like what you read, and would like to see more, do consider visiting this link:
