Yes, I agree on both points. I suspect that there are now a lot more people who are members of the church but are not totally committed to all of its precepts (among other things there are now a lot more churches with similar beliefs than there were in mediaeval times when there was only the Catholic church), and they are much more prepared to walk and possibly as you suggested split the church or form a schismatic group. With modern employment laws refusing a job would be definitely dodgy (especially with the president of his country on his side!) and sacking a person because of their religious status would be asking for trouble.
