Water, water everywhere

Well, nowhere near our house, but in several places not too far away.
For those who just came in, here's the thing: Westbury (my home town) is a railway kind of place, and a lot of the roads out of town have railway bridges over them. Since Doctor Beeching did his thing, more and more stuff has had to be carried by road, and lorries have got bigger and taller. The secret masters of Westbury have addressed this problem by progressively lowering the road under the railway bridges. This means that when it rains a lot, as it seems to have done in the night, that stretch of road becomes four or five feet deep in muddy water, and thus impassable to traffic. Both roads to Trowbridge are currently closed, though there are drive-arounds.
Hence the fact that we still have no handrail on the conservatory. The guy couldn't get into Westbury because, he said, the police had told him all the roads were closed, and he didn't know the drive-arounds. The fact that I managed to get all the way to the A36 and back this morning using normal routes (and hence, if he'd used a bit of initiative, so could he) is just one of those things: unfortunately that was after the apologetic phone call. So on Monday we'll be rearranging it yet again.
