...and which I'm choosing to believe was intentional. All those dates Gregory fired off at the heavies? They were dates on which the world moved a little further away from the feudal, aristocratic society that Excalibur was presumably supposed to bring back.
I'm anybody's for the knightly virtues and all that, and the romantic appeal of the (fictitious) Arthurian age, and I'm on record as saying that we've lost some good things along the way to where we are...but having thrown out the baby with the bathwater, the solution is not to bring the filthy bathwater back under the impression that it's miraculously turned into snake oil. We've been there and done that, and the baby is probably miles away by now. There are lessons to learn from our pasts, both the true one and the storybook one, but that isn't one of them. And I thought that was a point nicely and subtly made.
