Why is it that when fans write books about being fans, the first thing they do is perpetuate all the stupid myths that put people off fans in the first place, and then say "Of course I'm not like that, ha ha"?

None of us is Like That. Even the ones who are, a bit, are People. I hate this idea of the Other Fans, of creating a Them that you can sneakily edge away from and then point and hoot like all the rest. If anything were likely to make me start using the word "mundane" in a pejorative sense, it would be that--and I wouldn't be applying it to the complete non-fans, the ordinary nice decent people who don't happen to share our tastes, but to the hypocrites who do share them but don't want to be lumped in with the rest of us. They *want* to be mundane. They *choose* to be mundane. So be it.

Judge not. Lest ye be judged.

Why do you read them if the annoy you so much?

Because I always hope for the best. :)

What do you hope for? I don't mean as in an unbiased observation of fans, but what attracts you to the subject?

Well, I'm interested in other people who are like me in this respect, and why they choose to be like me, and how it affects their lives. What I hope to see is someone who is not ashamed of being like me in this respect having the articulacy to say so, and the combination of talent, application and luck to get into print saying so. Unfortunately, the only people who manage it seem to be the ones who are willing to badmouth the rest of us to make themselves look normal.

If you truly feel the need for it, why don't you write one and blaze the trail?

Never mind, question answered. :)

*sends you nice bottle of wine*

I get so sick of being sneered at by people who enjoy the same things as I do, but don't think one ought to express enthusiasm about them. *looks hard at most of own family members*

But I do think Jahura's question is apposite. It's not good for your blood pressure.

Jahura's questions always make me think, which is the best way to calm down. Anyway, given the choice I'd rather be too passionate than not passionate enough, every time. :)

I suppose I ought to write one, just to say "yeah, I'm a fan, wanna make something of it?"

I keep starting one, but as with all writing, starting is easy, getting to the middle is hard.

Is that the meat part or the lettuce-and-tomato part?

Having been judged, on many occasions, I somehow might feel entitled to my own opinion ... and to expressing it.

Free speech shouldn't cost you -- equally, no-one is obliged to *listen*.
