Actually, if you use a graphically-enabled browser, you should be able to see a little 'push-pin' icon up at the top of every post you comment on - along with the back/memories/tell-a-friend/flag/next ones. If you click that one, you'll get email notifications any time anyone comments to that entry. I've done it a couple of times, and I'm still, for example, getting the occasional notification of a comment on a longish meta-essay posted just after Deathly Hallows came out.
The pushpin icon also appears on every comment to an entry, so if you just want to track a particular thread, you can do that as well. I'm afraid it does mean you have to use a graphic browser, though - I'm not sure if the 'track this' link appears in a text-only one!
