In this new story, Mordecai's life is turned upside down again when Prince Varnak brings a royal command of utmost importance; he and Mordecai must travel down the river which divides Tamland's large and bitter enemies, Briom and Tsenesh, to the neutral territory of Freeport, to negotiate a vital trade deal. Reluctantly Mordecai prepares to leave his apprentice, Willibald, in charge of the magical safety of the kingdom. Then Willibald is kidnapped...
