Interesting times
Sep. 30th, 2013 08:02 pmWe had a band rehearsal this weekend, and it was wonderful fun.
valydiarosada,
the_magician and
eintx came and we rocked. Well, okay, mistakes were made and not all of them by me, but the feeling is there. S showed off some brilliant violin work, C wore his fingers to the bone doing barre chords, V played a mean tambourine and we all sang our hearts out. I brought out a couple of new songs and I think one of them will work really well.
And then my iPad died.
It was a supplementary update to iOS 7, which I downloaded and installed, not without much faff and agony and the deletion and reinstallation of four large apps, last week. It should have been straightforward. Instead I came back to it to find it in "recovery mode," and my only option a full restore which would lose my data.
Long story short, I called
the_gwenzilliad (thank you, Marion!) and she confirmed there was no way to avoid the doom, and talked me through starting the restoration. It didn't in fact take the ten hours it threatened to take, but it was quite harrowing, and when the thing finally came back on, not only did I have no data, I had no apps, and the app store flatly denied that I had ever owned any. That was a fun moment.
Come morning, and it had repented of its harsh words and allowed me to begin the long and difficult process of rebuilding trust between us. I expect to be downloading and reinstalling apps for the next two days at least, including the four big ones I only just reinstalled.
And I don't even like iOS 7 that much.
Note: this isn't a prompt to tell me how much you hate Apple or how iPads suck. I had a bit of that, but I'm over it now. My iPad will be as good as it ever was in a little while, and yes, I lost some data, but it's not the end of the world. And their tech support is great. :)
