Look at this. It's an article about Iceland, and why the last thing we heard in the news about it was that its economy was collapsing. Well, guess what; it got better (or at least is getting better). All on its own. Standing out against attempts on the part of other governments to rope it into the same handbasket in which we're all sliding merrily down the long spiral into hell.
I particularly love this sentence:
"Five years of a pure neo-liberal regime had made Iceland, (population 320 thousand, no army), one of the richest countries in the world."
I don't have citations for that, of course, but I find no difficulty in believing it, or what the action was that started the rot (mentioned in the next sentence). You may say "well, it's a small country, nobody would want to conquer it, that would never work here," and you might indeed be right. But I don't think so. The reason it wouldn't work here is that it would never be allowed to work.
To me this is hope, because it proves that a nation can run itself and its economy sanely for the benefit of all its citizens. And the reason why Iceland hasn't been in the news lately is that rich and powerful people don't want us to know that.
I wonder what they'll do next?
