Apparently the producer of Midsomer Murders has got into trouble for describing the fictional area as "the last bastion of Englishness" and thus justifying the lack of characters from other races. He was suspended, and then allowed back on the proviso that he would step down after the series is finished.
I don't know if anyone who responded angrily to this opinion has actually watched the series, but if they think that calling a place rife with incest, insanity, blackmail, substance abuse, rape and weekly multiple murder a "bastion of Englishness" was in any way complimentary to the English, I think a point may have been missed somewhere. The fundamental ethos of the series, as with all British Cosy whodunnits, is that all that Little England stuff is just a veneer over a seething, roiling mass of evil and hatred. Still, a goat has been duly scaped, so all must be well.
