We had a very nice visit from an old friend whom I will call Clement, and his lady. (He is on LJ, but I don't know if he would object to my linking his LJ name with either his real name or any actual information about him.)
Clement's has been an interesting life. When we first met him he was working in a semi-academic capacity for an august institution in London, and presented as a tweed-clad academic of inclinations bohemian if not louche, kind of like a long-haired, bearded Giles. He was active in re-enactment and in RPGing, and became, as I've mentioned elsewhere, the model for one of my archetypal Nyronds. At some point, for whatever reason, what seemed a fairly settled lifestyle fell apart around him, and he embarked upon a series of cataclysmic ups and downs which culminated in his retirement to a fairly remote part of the country and his disappearance, for going on twenty years, from our radar. Throughout that time, I looked sporadically for his name on the net, which didn't work because (a) it is a fairly ordinary-sounding name and (b) as it turned out he wasn't using it.
Seeing him now, he's filled out much the same way I have, and could pass for Niall McGinnis in Night Of The Demon if the beard were trimmed a bit. But he still puns like a master, he is still Clement, and it was good to be in his company again and know that he has survived the turbulence and (in some sense at least) reached safe harbour. And we like his lady as well; hopefully she wasn't too put off by us.
