Like Doctor Seuss's name.

Which was actually Geisel, but he preferred Seuss.

Which should really be pronounced Soyss, but which everyone pronounces Sooce.

Which should really be spelt Suess, but which everyone would probably then pronounce Swess.

Which would make Suessical the Musical completely unworkable. (And was that real anyway, or just an invention for Will and Grace?)

Also, I open a book on Farscape and find Justina Robson, who I gather is a good writer I haven't read yet, saying this:

"By contrast, the people in other shows, from Star Trek to Babylon 5, were leading lives focussed almost entirely on Issues of Immediate Action or scientific and political shenanigans, which filled up story lines on their own and left no room for any kind of normal human interaction."

I watched all those shows, and this is quite simply not true. But everyone says something like this. Is it me?

Going to bed now.

I gather a politician in one country A has officially apologised to another country B, for something which someone quite else did, in a previous century, in a very different country which happened to bear the same name as country A.

In the same spirit, I have established by painstaking genetic research that Mrs Doris Ploake, of 134 Ladysmith Mansions, Upper Tooting, is the lineal descendant of the chieftain of the Bent Bone people, who attacked and slaughtered almost to a man the Red Rock people some twelve thousand years ago. I have written to Mrs Ploake, in my capacity as the last descendant of the Red Rock tribe, demanding an immediate apology for this atrocity.

In my opinion, the best possible way finally to defeat the authors of acts of cruelty and aggression is to allow time and history quietly to render them no longer significant. As long as we remember them, as long as we feel responsible for them, one of their purposes has been successful, and in a sense they still live. Only when they are forgotten will they truly die. I know many people disagree with me on this, though.
