Re-reading the story bits from the third Science Of Discworld book, wondering if it's worth trying to read them to Jan since I'm starting to run out, I came to the bit at the end, where the authors quote the Darwin family motto as "Cave et aude" and translate it as "Watch and listen."

And if it weren't for the fact that "caveo" means not "watch" but "be on one's guard," and "audeo"* means not "listen," nor even "hear," but "dare," that would be a very good translation.

Be on your guard, and dare. That's a good motto too. Worth getting right in print, perhaps.

*They are perhaps thinking of "audio," which does mean "hear" and of which the imperative would be "audi."
