Scissors, Paper, Stone
Feb. 15th, 2009 01:52 amThis game pops up occasionally in the Nyrond stories, where they use it rather the way we use tossing a coin. It occurred to me the other night, though, that if I had some gumption I could quite easily parlay it into one of those cockamamie systems for sticking human beings into boxes, and if I joined Quizilla or one of those things I could work up an internet quiz for determining if you were a Scissors, Paper or Stone type. As for instance:
Stone people see themselves as discrete entities, apart from and impenetrable by the outside world. They present a rigid and unchanging face to others, and their approach to problems is to become even harder and so blunt the edge of the problem. Self-reliant and tenacious, they do not let go of ideas or embrace new ones easily, but are easily confused by changing circumstances.
Paper people are flexible and responsive, shaping themselves to every force that acts on them. Their approach to problems is to envelop them, to smother them if you will. Sensitive and mercurial, they can be seen as clinging or overpowering, and are easily damaged.
Scissors people value their dynamism and penetrative intellects. Their approach to problems is to attack them, seeking always to cut the Gordian knot and slice through to the solution. Possessed of formidable powers of concentration, their weakness is in the very sharpness of their edge, which is prone to fragility.
But of course I am lazy, and it's easy to believe that if it were truly a workable idea someone would have done it already. Maybe someone has...
It could also be the basis for a three-caste system like that of the Minbari. That I might use at some point.
