Finding the upside
Jan. 2nd, 2009 07:39 pmWe re-watched Neverwhere the other night, and it occurred to me that if Paterson Joseph plays the Doctor the same way he plays the Marquis de Carabas--in other words, playing to his strengths--at least it will be an end to this irritating tendency for the Doctor to stand there looking hangdog while the companions jeer at him, berate him, address him as "dumbo" or "spaceboy" or make disparaging remarks about his appearance. It will be a return to a Doctor who is In Charge with a capital I C, hopefully. And any unresolved sexual tension that the writers try to shoe-horn in will be sitting in a corner trying not to move and being vewy vewy quiet.
That's a big if. Of course he could choose to play it just like Tennant, but that would be an even worse waste of his undoubted abilities.
All this is, of course, sheer speculation as far as I know, but at last I have found a reason not to be completely hacked off if they go this route. Here's to a grown-up Doctor again!
