Nov. 13th, 2008 08:02 amManaged to fix the MIDI files on the tunes page, despite the fact that all my music software is on another machine. Just a case of changing the drums from channel 16 to channel 10. (For those who may be unfamiliar with MIDI, there are up to sixteen channels, and most MIDI instruments these days assume that channel 10 is the drum channel, where each key on the keyboard plays a different drum sound. So if you record your drum track on a different channel, it will get played as if it were a normal instrument, usually a piano, and be wildly out of key with the rest of the music. This parenthesis brought to you by Nyrond Enterprises (Unenlightening Explanations) Inc.)
It's borne in upon me that the MIDI files, in many cases, don't actually include the melody line, since they were created as accompaniments for someone singing. Thus One!, for instance, actually consists of about five hundred repetitions of the same three-chord sequence, which could get a touch tedious round about the third verse. (Actually, the tune of One! is almost as boring, now I think of it.)
I know what to do about this, I'm just not sure I'm in a position to do it. I have mp3s of most of the songs, and they sound a lot better, but they were done with the help of numerous friends, some of whom I no longer have any contact with, all of whom ought to be consulted or at least told before I whang their performances up on the web for all to hear. I know I'm not charging for it, but even so, I'm not sure where I stand here.
