Just a thought
Oct. 20th, 2006 08:41 am"My son. I trust you are in good health.
"As I record this you are about to leave Vulcan to study at the human Starfleet Academy on Earth. If you are viewing this message, it is because you have at last repented of your rash decision and renounced your membership of that body. It is my hope that you will do this soon. I feel that I am in part responsible for the circumstances which impelled you to choose this path, and therefore, now that you have returned to the true Vulcan way, I owe you an explanation.
"It is generally accepted that you are half human, that Amanda, my chosen mate, is your mother. All Vulcan is aware of the story, and it is believed by the humans as well. This is, in fact, not the case. There is no scientific basis for the mingling of genetic material from different planetary sources, and were it not for the apparent existence of yourself as an exception to that rule, no-one would ever have questioned it. At some point in the future, as our knowledge increases, it may become feasible to combine two such materials in the laboratory, but the engendering of offspring between a human and a Vulcan, or a human and a Klingon, or any other combination of species, by the normal means, is simply not possible.
"You were in fact the product of an early indiscretion on my part. I was away from Vulcan on a diplomatic mission when, due no doubt to some local influence, my time came upon me unexpectedly. One of my junior staff was in a position to...assist me, but it was not appropriate for her to raise a child at that point in her career, and therefore Amanda agreed to adopt you, and the necessary fictions to account for your existence were put in place at that time. As you grew to adolescence, indeed, they proved extremely useful: your emotional lability index has always been abnormally high, and the story of your mixed parentage provided a useful pretext for excusing your many youthful indiscretions. Unfortunately, as I now perceive, it has also led you to the misapprehension that you are not fitted to assume a normal role in Vulcan society, and from this false premise you have proceeded to an equally erroneous conclusion, that among humans you will find some measure of acceptance.
"I am confident, however, that when you find this not to be the case, you will of your own volition return to your home and the society of your peers. I regret that I have not apprised you of these facts before, but the embarrassment that a general disclosure would have occasioned, to you, to myself, to Amanda and to your true mother, would have seriously jeopardised all our careers, not to say the course of diplomatic relations between Vulcan and the rest of the Federation. Now that you have returned to Vulcan, I am certain that you can be relied upon to maintain the status quo, to all our benefit, and that you will recognise that ours was, in the circumstances, the only logical course to take.
"Live long and prosper, my son. Sarek out."
