A smallship is the vessel in which Nyronds travel to and from the homeship. They are built, maintained and jealously guarded by the homeship computers, who will only release one on completion of a lengthy and bizarre ritual that varies each time. Usually they work reasonably well, though no-one seems to have told the computers about aerodynamics, let alone grace or symmetry. At very worst they are a safe place to retreat to (and with) when all is lost, or when planetbound life has simply become too much to bear. I wish I knew where mine was.
