I downloaded the demo of the fifth and final game in the Myst series last night and had a go. It looks a little different from previous games, being what’s called “real-time 3D” rather than “pre-rendered,” but the graphics look fine to me, and wonder of wonders it runs on my machine. I’m daring to hope that means the game itself will.
The game involves some creatures called “bahro,” who were seen briefly at the end of Uru, and seeing them from slightly closer I can confirm that, yes, they do look pretty much like the goons from the old Popeye cartoons. Small oval head, big barrel body, bulgy forearms and thighs, and just the whole posture. Even their cry sounds a bit like the scribbles that the goons used to speak in. I can’t see how this could have been coincidence, but I can’t see why it would have been deliberate. Funny, though.J
So I got to thinking about Popeye on Myst island, and trying to imagine that constant running commentary he used to keep up, which was probably improvised by someone cleverer than me, blast it. (I could never listen fast enough to catch more than a fraction of it.) And from marvelling at that I started imagining an encounter between Popeye and Gollum, and wondering whether they’d ever get around to talking to each other.
That’s it. See, I’m feeling better already.
