Computer update: putting the .vxd file into Jan's system directory didn't do anything. I may have to run the Network Troubleshooter again, since that was how I found out it was missing. Similarly, adding the various IP addresses to my ZA Trusted Zone did not enable me to see Jan's computer, and I'm not quite brave enough to turn the thing off completely, especially in light of recent alarming messages on the Myst forums about something called Botzor (I think). So we stand where we were, pretty much. Thanks to everyone who offered advice: if anything else occurs, please feel free to jump in...

Would you mind if I forwarded this to Stryker to see if he has any input on this?

Not in the least. Please, please do. I looked at "Home Networking for Dummies" in Smith's at lunchtime and it was too complicated for me...

Waaaa! I'm a sub-dummy!!

Done. You should be getting a CC any minute now. :)

Suddenly thinking about this, I called Paul B because he still has a Win98 machine, and identified probably why we couldn't shar Jan's drives.

Control Panel / Networking / File and Print Sharing

Turn it on (don't bother with print sharing). This should then enable you to do the right-click / sharing thing on her drives, and should let you see her machine from yours. You need to look in Network Neighbourhood, under the workgroup name.

Hmm, that's another thing. Check that your workgroup name is the same as yours. I think I left them both as WORKGROUP, but Win98 may have a different default value from Win2k. For Win2k it's under Control Panel / System (tab Network Identification), for Win98 I think it's under Control Panel / Networking somewhere (Client for Microsoft Networks properties, possibly).

The other possibilities include an external USB hard drive, but those cost -- PCWorld has a Freecom 30GB one for 59.99, Dabs has it for 49.29 (all inc VAT) but they are ordered on request, they have the LaCie at 50.41 in stock. Or putting your other hard drive into her machine...

I think I tried some of this, but not all. I shall do so when I next have a chance at her machine.

I don't think I've ever managed to get a full two-way connection between a Win2K machine and a Win98 machine. What I do, and what does work, is to fully share a folder on the 98 machine and then do all the reading and writing from the 2K machine which should be able to see that shared folder.

So drop the files in that shared folder (or just share the whole drive) on the 98, then go to the 2K and pull them over.

That is of course if you can manage to see the shared folder from the 2K machine.

Yay success!!!

Which is exactly what I'm doing. D drive is copied, C drive should be done, according to Windows, in about three hours.

The workgroup name needed changing and I had to share the drives. At that point everything became suspiciously easy...

If the original drive was badly grunged some of those copied files may be corrupted. Not much you can do about it now of course, but you might want to quickly check the most important ones and make sure that they open, are about the right size, and are not visibly corrupt.
