I went today and stayed till she got sleepy. (This in itself is an improvement.) She's got a drip hanging off her (all right, another drip) and her toe has been dressed up to slightly below the knee. They're very worried about the toe--words beginning with "necro-" have been used--but apparently it is just the toe at the moment. Still, it will be horrible if it has to come off. It's the second toe on the right foot, and Jan's rather proud of her second toes, which are longer than the big toes, which means something, possibly prehistoric.

She's being incredibly brave, and she managed to eat half a tiny bowl of ice cream this morning. I took her some pears, and bought her a notebook from the Friends shop (I only had a Bic biro to leave her, but I'll take her some of her favourite gel pens tomorrow), and I got her logged on to the hospital wifi, so she has some talking books on the iPad.

The main thing that's actually bothering her is explosive TMI, which she's been getting all week, and which apparently recurred twice after I left. Poor Jan. And poor nurses.

In other news, lots of things have changed in Bath since I was last there. There's a Maplins, a shop into which I had never before been as far as I can recall. The area round the bus station is all poshified. Our old office...well, think Sunnydale at the end of the season seven finale of Buffy, and it couldn't happen to a more suitable place. And rail replacement buses are designed for people with no legs.

I'll be going back tomorrow. I hope it won't be quite as hot.
