“My dear Thelofric,” the Emperor said. “You have some morsel to contribute to the conversation?”
Quekeeg found himself able to turn his head. He saw Thelofric rise slowly to his feet, and marvelled at the old man’s powers of resistance.
“You are correct...sire,” Thelofric said heavily, “in that some of us have broken the oath we swore eight hundred years ago. I speak for myself, Gerhard, Mondibulon and Quekeeg when I say that we recognise our guilt and submit ourselves to your justice.
“These others, though,” Thelofric spread his hands to indicate the remainder of the Council, “had no part in that oath. They joined the Council much later, knowing little of its goals. Moreover, they, like Waxboem, and unlike us, are...” He hesitated, and summoned all his strength. “They are fully human,” he said, “and they die very easily, and unlike you, do not come back. I ask you...sire...to spare their lives. Take your revenge on us. We have wronged you. They knew not what they were doing.”
