How many atheists initially came to their belief (or lack of belief, if you insist) because something bad happened, either in their lives or in the history of the world, and God didn't bloody well do something about it?
Can't speak for the others. I don't believe in God for the same reason I don't believe in Zeus; I wasn't molded into it when my brain was young and err...flexible, and now it seems at odds with what I know of the world. I mean, supposedly there's this guy, and he's like a human, except that you can't ever see him or hear him or anything--he lives in the sky; he's immensely powerful and knowledgeable but he cares so much about what we midge-like humans think that he'll smite us with lightning if we don't respect him, and he runs around getting human women pregnant... oh, come on.
That said, I feel about God the way I feel about Darth Vader; if the stories people tell me about him are true, he's one nasty piece of work.
