Mar. 23rd, 2007 03:26 amA new Mulla Nasrudin story, which I wrote gods know how long ago:
"The chemical processes that make up the mind have been fully explained and there is no need to look for a magical 'soul'." (Eric Drexler, paraphrased)
The wise men of the nation learned that an unknown entity was stirring the people to discontent with japes and speeches, but however hard they tried no-one would give them any information. So they sent agents out to track the unknown.
One reported: "I have found hoofprints. This thing is hoofed like a donkey."
Another said: "Hay has been eaten along the trail. This being eats hay like a donkey."
A third announced: "I have just stepped in something which is also characteristic of a donkey."
The head of the Secret Police brought his report to the king: "The traces we have found suggest that this dissent is being caused by a donkey. Since, however, donkeys cannot talk, we conclude that it must be the work of a powerful jinn in the shape of a donkey. It would be most unwise to interfere with such a being."
"Why are you laughing, Nasrudin?" the King asked, when the spy had gone.
"Oh, no reason, sire," Nasrudin said. "I was just thinking about those who confuse the process with the operator."
