He drafted a press release all right, and sent it out while I was gone. He's booked me on a planetwide lecture tour, to explain the finer points of the Coprodist Schism of Plut to the unconverted. Did I mention the part where I know nothing about the frodding thing?
I mentioned it to him, of course, and he grinned in that "my teeth are eager to meet my small intestine" way and said it was very interesting and I should read up on it, probably before I get off the plane in Shrigom City. Then he excused himself to see about the packing, leaving me to consider my options.
I hadn't seriously considered just chucking the whole thing and heading back to the homeship, but I was beginning to think about it. This was surely too much to expect any Nyrond to cope with. Orlando and Vassily would understand...but I'd still get a zero and have to retake. And no doubt P would be crowing about it for months, if not years. Anything I might do thereafter would be overshadowed by the memory of me scuttling back, tail between my legs, because some stupid rookie couldn't keep his stupid self from meddling--

Sabotage? I hadn't even considered that. Could he be so perfidious, so steeped in low cunning, as to inveigle himself on board deliberately to make me look like an idiot?
What am I thinking. Of course he could. He's a Nyrond.
Well, frod it, so am I. And I will not be beaten by a conniving treacherous son of a cloning vat. I'll leave this planet with a profit or not at all.
He's just come back and handed me my green folder with all my coup notes. "I picked it up as you were leaving," he said. "I thought it might be important." All wide eyes and innocence. Yesterday he might have convinced me. Yesterday those notes might still have been worth something to me.
Well, it seems I have some other reading to do for the moment. I shall consider my revenge on Master Palinurus in due course.
