Response from the Beeb

To the complaint I made on Saturday about the pop-up over the last few minutes of nuWho.

"The 'Over the Rainbow' trail in 'Doctor Who' should not have played out on Saturday and we apologise to all 'Doctor Who' fans whose enjoyment of the show was disrupted. We recognise the strength of feeling that has been expressed and are taking steps to ensure that this mistake will not happen again."

We shall see.

Strangely enough, I don't remember seeing the pop-up trailer. This either means that it only went out on the traditional broadcast service, and not over Freeview, or else I have become so enured to this loathsome practice that I now blank them out completely.

I'm not that comforted by the BBC's apologies (both private and public). They seem to be saying that the mistake was to use a pop-up on a Prime-Time programme watched by a lot bolshie people, rather than "Pop-ups are an anathema, and we shouldn't be using them on any programme, at any time."

It wasn't on BBC HD (or rather it was but over the credits not over the end of the programme, and these days I tend to ignore the credits on DW because they contain spoilers for the next episode). I've also seen that it wasn't on the foreign versions.

I agree, popups should be banned completely, as should the 'squeeze' of credits.
